How much screen time is too much for children
21st-century kids are smarter, more advanced, and technologically sounder than most of us. They spend time doing things that were not there in our time. Kids nowadays have mobile phones, tablets, laptops, televisions, and other electronic devices that they spend most of their time upon.
Today’s parents are well-aware of the fact that all the information, education, and lifestyle have shifted online after the Covid-19 pandemic. Children have to attend online classes, give exams online, and do everything at their fingertips.
The good thing is that they can limit their child’s time on the screen but cannot fully stop it.
Excessive use of electronic devices like mobile phones and tablets can affect your child’s body, brain as well as social behaviour. But did you know that certain technologies can enhance your child’s learning capabilities so that their screen time extracts positive results?
According to research, children aged between 6 to 15 years spend an average of 8 to 9 hours using electronic media devices. This much screen time can not only take a toll on your physical health but can affect your child’s mental state to a level where they get addicted to using electronic devices.
Spending too much time using electronic devices can cause insomnia, stubbornness, and the risk of obesity. As your child grows, their brain-boosting screen time drops significantly. With the rise of social media, kids are way more interested in operating an Instagram or Snapchat account rather than using the time for productive study material.
The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests that the screen time for children aged between 2 to 5 years must not be more than an hour a day. And for the children between 6 to 15 years, the screen time must not be more than 2 to 3 hours a day.
With everything shifting online, children have to spend at least 6 hours of their time on screen due to online classes and exams.
As a parent, how can you make sure your children are not spending most of their screen time that is non-productive! In answer to that, parents must develop the rules for using electronic devices and make their children follow the same.
You can make sure that your children’s room doesn’t have a mobile phone, tablet, laptop, or television. In order to track what your children are viewing, you must discuss efficient ideas, and their choices, and ask them what they are watching and hearing when they are online.
Make your child follow the rules and let them stick to them. This can not only help boost your efficiency but also helps in keeping them healthy mentally and physically.
